Kabambe outlines plans for the North
UTM Party president Dalitso Kabambe has assured people of the Northern Region of development once voted into power in the September 16 General Election.
He said this on Friday in Mzimba at the end of his campaign tour of the Northern Region.
Kabambe, who is an economist and former governor of the Reserve Bank of Malawi, reiterated his promise to fix the country’s ailing economy, restructure the budget and allocate more resources to agriculture, mining and tourism sectors.

He said: “We will champion a federal system of budgeting by allocating K100 billion to every council in Malawi to implement their projects.
“Again, we will intensify irrigation farming for the country to stop relying on rain-fed agriculture and invest K500 billion into mining by creating new 10 mines, including Kanyika Niobium Mine in Mzimba District.”
On his part, UTM Party national campaign director Makwenda Chunga, who is also parliamentary candidate for Mzimba South Constituency, said people in the district will vote for UTM because they have been fooled by previous governments on several development pledges.
Speaking at Mpherembe Trading Centre, Inkosi
Mpherembe said people in his area were struggling to sell tobacco as they rely on Mzuzu Floors following the closure of a market at Kabwafu.
“The road to Mzuzu is in bad shape, a nightmare to tobacco farmers to transport their produce to Mzuzu or for buyers to come to Mpherembe,” he said.
According to Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) figures, about 803 374 people registered to vote in the Northern Region.
Earlier in the week, Kabambe was in Karonga where village head Mwalughali from Traditional Authority Kyungu asked him to rehabilitate Chinunu Irrigation Scheme once elected into office.
In response, Kabambe, who was accompanied by his wife Bridget and his running mate Mathews Mtumbuka, said his administration will look into it.
