Kabambe vows to revive manufacturing

UTM Party president Dalitso Kabambe has promised to revamp the manufacturing sector in the country if elected as president in the September 16 2025 General Election.

Speaking during a political rally at Bangwe Township in Blantyre, he said Blantyre used to be a thriving city with manufacturing companies in the 1970s, but most of the factories have closed due to hostile economic environment.

Kabambe said if elected, his government will invest K500 billion every year into the manufacturing sector and create a favourable economic environment to enable businesses to thrive.

“Our vision is to have factories making products such as fertiliser and phones. Through this, young people who are staying idle will have jobs and the economy will improve,” he said.

He added that his government will establish a development bank to offer low interest loans.

UTM vice-president (South) Richard Makondi, secretary general Willie Kalonga, publicity secretary Felix Njawala and presidential advisers Patricia Kaliati and Matthews Mtumbuka were in attendance.

Makondi said the economy has deteriorated despite the country having resources such as minerals, hardworking people, good soil and abundant water.

In his remarks, UTM national youth director Penjani Kalua said the party will resume candlelight events in June in honour of Chilima.

Kabambe has been conducting rallies and whistle-stop tours in the Southern Region for the past week.

Malawi is going to the polls in September this year to elect president, members of Parliament and councillors.
