Said she was aware that after winning the primary, pressure for her to leave her position at Chancellor College would increase: Kabwila

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) publicity secretary and Chancellor College lecturer Jessie Kabwila has won primary elections, beating two other contestants to become the party candidate for Salima North West Constituency in the May 20 2014 Tripartite Election.

Kabwila has been under pressure from the University of Malawi (Unima) and ruling People’s Party (PP) to resign following her appointment as MCP spokesperson to avoid conflict of interest.

However, Kabwila has refused to leave her post, arguing that hers was not an elected position.

In an interview on Wednesday, Kabwila said she was aware that after winning the primary, pressure for her to leave her position at Chancellor College would increase.

“This does not mean that I have run for an elected position. I will have to announce first, perhaps after I present my nomination papers in January [to Malawi Electoral Commission],” she said.

Kabwila has since written the University Council, asking for a one-year sabbatical leave.

Unima registrar Benedicto Okomaatani Malunga said an application for sabbatical leave from Kabwila had not reached his office.
