Kachali donates to Mzimba fire victims
Former vice-president Khumbo Kachali has donated K1 million to Mzimba vendors following the fire that gutted the market a week ago.
The fire, which according to reports originated from an Escom electricity pole, led to destruction of goods worth over K500 million with about 632 vendors affected.
Speaking at his residence in Mzimba, the former vice-president said he was saddened by the development considering that the market was the source of livelihood for many people across Mzimba Boma and beyond.
“I was shocked when I heard the news about Mzimba Market [fire] and that is why I have thought to extend a helping hand,” said Kachali, who is also Mzimba South-West member of Parliament.
District commissioner for M’mbelwa Council, Thomas Chirwa, thanked the former vice- president for his gesture and asked other well-wishers to come in and assist the people.
Said Chirwa: “As a council, we are happy to receive the donation and we are hopeful that many other well-wishers will still come forward to help the vendors.”
Chairperson for Mzimba Market vendors, Emmanuel Ng’ambi, said the vendors were left helpless due to the tragedy and the donation is a relief to them.
