There is remarkable progress on the rehabilitation of Kamuzu Barrage and construction of a new bridge along Shire River at Liwonde Township, with government expressing enthusiasm of beating the project’s deadline.

The barrage is undergoing major renovation works, 50 years after it was commissioned by founding president the late Hastings Kamuzu Banda in 1965.

Government’s desk manager for the project Toney Nyasulu said significant ground work had been done for the main tasks.

Explained Nyasulu: “We have constructed the coffer dams for the dewatering process in readiness for the actual renovation works and construction of a new bridge to start.”

A recent visit to the site by Weekend Nation showed substantial progress on refitting the barrage as well as erecting a new bridge to run parallel to the structure.

The project is part of the Water Related Infrastructure Development of the Shire River Basin Management Programme (Phase 1) being funded by World Bank to the tune of about K20 billion.

The upgrading exercise, being supervised by a Norwegian construction company Norplan, started in November last year and is expected to be completed by October next year.
