Kanyenda: We deserve PSL status

Flames veteran striker Esau Kanyenda is relieved that his South African Premiership employers, Polokwane City, retained Premiership status on Sunday after beating Harry Nyirenda’s Black Leopards 2-1.

Nyirenda and Kanyenda did not feature in the relegation/promotion play-off because of injuries, but Kanyenda was nonetheless happy when contacted yesterday.

“We have made history as being the only third team to retain PSL status. I think my team deserves to be where we are,” said Kanyenda.

City needed the play-offs after finishing second from bottom of PSL.

The result of Sunday’s game means Nyirenda will remain in the First Division for a third consecutive season.

The defender is the only Flames player in the First Division while the rest Robin Ngalande, Robert Ng’ambi, Limbikani Mzava, Frank ‘Gabadinho’ Mhango and Atusaye Nyondo are in the PSL.
