Kapito defends NBS Bank golf title

Up-and-coming golfer Levison Kapito swang to an incredible net 67 finish on Country Club Limbe (CCL) greens on Saturday to win the NBS Bank Monthly Mug back to back.

Spurred by his trainer, Jimmy Nyalugwe, businessperson, Kapito, 31, overcame a 67-strongfield that included his runner-up Victor Jere (net 69) and third-placed Aboo Osman (net 70).

Kapito is just three months old in golf but, already, he seems to be on the right path to follow the success of his elder brother, the late Gilliam who was the country’s only professional golfer and trainer before he died on September 8 2008.

“I am trying to fit into my late brother’s big shoes. He could win several competitions in a row and I am taking that path,” said Kapito whose NBS Bank contest was sponsored by George Kauma.

Following his victory last weekend, Kapito’s handicap is set to improve from 18 to somewhere between 15 and 13, according to CCL vice-golf captain Chimdima Mhango.

The Bangwe Township resident began playing golf at handicap 24 in April.

While congratulating Kapito for the rare achievement, NBS Bank marketing manager Timothy Ngwira appreciated efforts that golfers have so far made in growing the bank.

He also informed the golfers about the Win-a-House competition the bank is currently running.

Said Ngwira: “Deposit K20 000 in NBS Bank’s Current or Savings Accounts to stand a chance to win a house for yourself. That can also grant you an opportunity to enter our monthly draws to win cash prizes and iron sheets.”
