Businessperson Justice Katika has said it is his wish that Bangwe Township should produce a team to play in the Super League.

Katika said this during the launch of the K2 million (about $5 000) Justice Katika Football and Netball tournaments at Desert ground in the township on Sunday.

He urged football officials in the area to come together and explore the idea of forming a strong team from the players that take part in the tournament.

Katika, who is aspiring for the area’s parliamentarian seat, said his sponsoring of the tournament is not to advance his political aspirations, but to develop sports in the area.

“In Ndirande Township they have a team in the Super League [Evirom], why can’t we also come up with a strong team that can enter the Southern Region Football League [SRFL] and then make its way to the Super League? It is an idea that can be explored,” said Katika.

He also pledged continued sponsorship of the annual tournament.

There were also other activities to spice up the launch such as live band performances that included Saul Chembezi, Thomas and Collins Chitimbe.

In a launch game, Mthandizi All Stars beat Ntopwa United 3-1 while in netball, Ntopwa Super Girls thrashed Saluja Sisters 42-8.

According to competitions manager, Frank Maideni, so far 57 teams [42 football and 15 netball] have registered.

He said the tournament will run for about four months and the football champions will get K200 000, runners-up K150 000 while third and fourth-placed teams will pocket K100 000 and K50 000 respectively.

In netball, the champions will get K100 000, runners-up K70 000 while third and fourth-placed teams will receive K50 000 and K25 000 respectively.
