KCH to conduct free urinary incontinence surgeries

Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) department of surgery and gynaecology will from February 5 to 9 2024 conduct urogynaecology camp to treat outpatients and operate on patients with urinary incontinence.

The department has since appealed to the public requesting patients seeking treatment in this area to make bookings ahead of the camp.

In an interview yesterday, one of the team leaders Dr Carol Tafadzwa Dzorani said urologists and urogynaecologists from England will  be in the country to conduct the camps alongside local urologists.

She said: “We are calling on all patients with involuntary leakage of urine when coughing, sneezing, laughing, doing strenuous exercise, or those that are frequently passing urine, leaking urine before getting to the bathroom or leaking urine after passing urine to come for evaluation.”

However, Dzorani has advised patients seeking treatment to first visit the KCH Surgery Department for evaluation before the actual camp.

She said: “All patients with conditions that affect the urinary tract in men, women and children, and diseases that affect the reproductive system are asked to visit the department on Tuesdays and Thursdays for booking and evaluation before the actual camp.

“During the camp, urologists will also operate on patients with pelvic organ prolapse and we encourage these patients to come for booking and evaluation as well. All they have to do is come on the said days and meet local doctors who will examine them and see if they qualify for treatment.”

Urologists are doctors who specialise in the study or treatment of the function and disorders of the urinary system. They also treat conditions involving the reproductive organs and the adrenal glands, since the reproductive systems of males and females are linked closely to their urinary systems.
