Kenya act tough on arrival

Listen to this article

Kenya’s Harambee Stars acted tough on arrival in Lilongwe on Sunday afternoon when they turned down a bus which FAM had hired to ferry them to Blantyre.

The development led to the team being held up at Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) for about five hours.

The visitors later reluctantly agreed to travel by road, but there was to be another mishap as they refused to travel in the bus which FAM had hired, claiming it was sub-standard.

But Football Association of Malawi (FAM) chief executive officer Suzgo Nyirenda blamed the Kenyan FA for the predicament, since they came through KIA instead of Chileka International Airport as agreed.

“We learnt that they had made other arrangements and travelled to Lilongwe while we were waiting for them at Chileka in Blantyre.

“So, we told them that the problem was not of our making. They were just trying to be difficult.

“In the end, they understood and agreed to travel by the bus we had hired for them,” said Nyirenda.

Kenya, who anchor Group F of the Africa World Cup qualifiers with two points, are camping at Sunbird Mount Soche in Blantyre.
