Angry people in Nkhotakota last Sunday marched to Nkhotakota Police Station and offices of the district health officer (DHO) to express their outrage against a woman who dumped her newly born baby into a well.

Police arrested 34-year-old Mary White from Kansonga Village, T/A Malenga in Ntchisi, on allegations that she dumped the baby.

To show their dismay at the act, people from Vinjenje Village, T/A Malengachanzi in the district, where the incident happened, protested to demand a stiff penalty for the suspect.

Nkhotakota Police spokesperson Kaitano Lubrino confirmed the incidents.

“They chanted for about three hours and marched to the DHO and police. They dispersed after they had achieved their mission,” said Lubrino.

He said a one-day-old baby was found floating in a well, prompting some people to report the tragic incident to police who instituted investigations into the matter.

“We arrested the woman after establishing that she was the mother of the baby. We took her for medical examination at Nkhotakota District Hospital where it was established that she had delivered a baby earlier,” said Lubrino.

According to Lubrino, White admitted committing the offence.

“She told police that she delivered a dead baby in a toilet and decided to dump it in the well, believing that nobody was aware of her pregnancy,” he said.

Lubrino said the suspect has three other children.
