Tables have been turned in the ongoing Lab Enterprise-sponsored Match Play golf competition being played at Blantyre Sports Club (BSC).

The tournament’s organising committee member Justice John Katsala said: “We have witnessed walkovers after some pairs decided to withdraw due to various reasons.”

Pairs of Steve Chanje and David Nyirenda, Keta Mulwafu and Sam Kamkosi, Dingaan Kelvin Chirwa and John Suzi-Banda could not find themselves on the tee box on their scheduled tee-off times, thereby making the pairs of John Gift Mwakhwawa and Eric Chapola, Welkam Phiri and Sam Mwale and Chris Kapanga and Charles Merrick going to the next round without hitting the ball.

Kamkosi was involved in a road accident some days before the game.

Blantyre Sports Club captain Hudson Kantwanje and his deputy Nestor Msowoya were pushed to play in the plate category by the president of Golf Union of Malawi (GUoM) James Chimwaza and Mayamiko Kalizang’oma on the 17th hole.

William Mabulekesi and Misheck Esau were humbled by Sam Chiwaula and his son Gilton. The vocal pair of Victor Jere and Tarang Makhetcha made sure they lived up to their word by kicking out the sponsor Noel Lipipa and his partner Furkan Gani on 16th hole.

Katsala and Sopie Kaira managed to beat Ahmed Abbas and Milton Macheka on the last hole.

The first-round was concluded on Saturday with the much-awaited game of the defending doubles champions of Donbell Mandala and Edwin Chipala who showed the Malawi number one golfer, Gabriel Kambale and his partner Harold Jiya, how to chip.

Kambale was quick to concede on hole 16 after noticing the champions were better than his pair.
