Lessons through retrenchment
Many companies in their quest to reduce wage bill have resorted to retrenching and restructuring their operations. This in a nutshell serves their purpose and has an impact on the retrenched employees.
However, life must go on for those affected just like life goes on for those who have survived the retrenchment.
Retrenchment is considered one of the worst forms of losing a job. It usually comes at a time when one is least prepared to embrace the news of losing his or her source of bread. This is why this is swallowed like a bitter pill.
For many who take work as their sole source of income, they find it hard to sail through as they hardly have a fall-back plan. The only option is to rely on the savings they were making whilst in employment and in most cases they are not enough.
It is the lessons through retrenchment that teach many the beauties of entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurship is a new phenomenon, which has recently been embraced by many.
You see folks; our education system usually teaches us to work hard in class so that we get jobs in offices. Later, we become complacent without even thinking about other avenues. This is the sick mentality that has left many used, abused, dejected and rejected after retrenchment.
However, some have found entrepreneurship productive and profitable if well managed. The current wave of entrepreneurship is the way to go in modern life as it gives room to maneuver whilst managing oneself. It is, therefore, imperative to note that whether you are working or not, going into entrepreneurship is the wisest decision.
The other imminent thing to consider is investing in assets such as houses, land etc. Many people believe in that the best time to invest is when they have a lot of money. That is not true. There is no time in life when money is a lot or enough. We always start small and build up to stardom whilst making profits and further improving our lives. Thus, while one is in active employment, it is important to save up and invest in a little something from the salaries and loans that are accessible at the work places.
The pains of retrenchment can be hard-hitting and very painful as it sinks in. When reality check hits that one has lost their job and that they do not have to bath early every morning, set forth for the bus stage and off to work, it becomes difficult to accept and come to terms with it.
The strength in it is how one accepts the reality and positively moves forward. Otherwise, this turns into a blame game, pointing fingers and blaming others for one’s misfit. Having a positive mind with a positive attitude is the only way to go in accepting the realities of retrenchment.
Furthermore, a critical analysis into retrenchment opens up doors, opportunities and a new wave of ideas on sustainability. When employed, one spends almost 10 or more hours within the confines of work without having to think of enterprising. This often times leads to complacency as the cliché of job security settles in. Of course some who are in active employment have ventured into entrepreneurship, but many chose to remain dormant up until mishaps happen.
With the same 10 hours spent in an office awaiting a monthly pay, someone out there in entrepreneurship might have made more bucks than those earned collectively in a month.
Everything happens for a reason. Every season comes with a purpose. Therefore, it is important to note that when such scenarios happen, embrace them with a positive attitude, sometimes it is a blessing in disguise. n
