Registration clerks in Likoma have beaten their target in the ongoing mass registration exercise.

The registration teams set out to register 6 179 Malawians aged at least 16 years old, but have served 8 275.

Registration underway on the island

On Tuesday, assistant district registrar Stains Kumwenda described the 33.92 percent as a big leap.

“Interestingly, all chiefs and village heads in all the centres have confirmed that all people in their villages have been registered,” said the National Registration Bureau (NRB) official.

There are almost 11 000 people on Likoma and Chizumulu islands, National Statistical Office (NSO) projections show.

Area Development Committee chairperson Alexander Chitanda described the data derived from the 2008 census as outdated, saying the national registration exercise might give reliable figures.
