Nearly 100 travellers from Likoma and Chizumulu islands spent Saturday night on Lake Malawi after the privately owned Malungo passenger boat broke down.

According to some passengers, the double-decked wooden vessel jerked to a near-tragic halt around 7pm due to engine failure.

The passengers reportedly feared for the worst when they discovered there was no alternative engine and few life jackets on board, contrary to marine standards.

The risky boat ride comes slightly over a week since MV Ilala, the most affordable and reliable vessel which the islanders consider a lifeline to the mainland, was last seen on the lake.
