Likoma islanders bring culture to town

They may be islanders, but this weekend, Likoma will not be separated from the mainland as they bring their traditional dances to Blantyre and Lilongwe.

Likoma Islanders, which is a cultural heritage for people from Likoma and Chizumulu Islands, will host malipenga and chioda traditional dances from the islands at Robin’s Park in Blantyre on Saturday and at Crossroads Hotel in Lilongwe on Sunday.

The organisation has ferried three cultural dance troupes from the islands which will perform at the two events.

Supporting the cultural event will be Piksy, who is expected to perform his songs in a cultural stage arrangement.

In an interview with The Nation, Kriss Manda, said they have organised the event to keep alive their heritage from the Likoma which is very unique in its own ways.

“We want our children who are based in town to appreciate their heritage and even the old ones to reconnect with their cultural side,” said Manda.

He added that besides the traditional dances, there will be display and sale of local cuisines from the islands and speeches about the history of Likoma, Chizumulu and its people.

The Show has been organised as a preparation for Likoma Summer Festival a, Lake Cruise trip which is slated forAugust 30 to 31.
