Lilongwe to host cartoons exhibition

Malawi will hold a first ever political cartoons exhibition in Lilongwe scheduled for August.

Organisers, MediaCorp in conjunction with the German Embassy are currently receiving published cartoon works for the exhibition that will also see the winner walking away with assorted prizes.

point-of-order_bigTo enter the exhibition, cartoonists are being encouraged to send five of their best cartoons published in the last year . The entries should be in hard copy as published with and dateline is today.

“Are you a cartoonist doing some work with the country’s newspapers or on-line publications? Have you published any political cartoon and satirical cartoons in the last 12 months? We are inviting you to present work you have published exploring political events and pronouncements in the country.

According to MediaCorp CEO Mabvuto Banda, the exhibition will be an annual event aimed at recognising the role of cartoons in setting the agenda.

“MediaCorp, a multimedia consulting company, in partnership with the German Embassy decided on doing an annual political cartoon exhibit starting this year as a means of showcasing how political cartoons have been able to set the social agenda in Malawi to re-orient and shape the public opinion through recurrent depictions mirroring current socio-political issues.

“The cartoons will be sold at the exhibition and proceeds to be raised will be shared between the cartoonists and a charity to be chosen by the German Embassy.

The exhibition will take place in August in Lilongwe. An overall winner will be announced and will go away with some prices sponsored by Airtel, MediaCorp and the German Embassy,” explained.
