Limbe Open Golf thrills on return

Over 100 golfers took to the Country Club Limbe (CCL) golf course in Blantyre as the Limbe Open Championship returned at the weekend after almost a decade’s absence.

To add extra spice, the three-day tournament attracted nine sponsors, namely NBS Bank plc, Amaryllis Hotel, Salvage 2000,  Evic Printers and Stationery, Gorrila Sports, Conforzi Group, Golders Sports, Kabula Lodge and CCL.

CCL board chairperson Shadrick Chikusilo was left overwhelmed by the turnout and the support the event got.

He said: “This is testimony that the Limbe Open Championship is back. The response was overwhelming and I would like to thank our sponsors for their support.

“Special mention to all of you golfers, we had representation from almost all golf clubs in the country and we do not take that for granted.”

Chikusilo also said they will ensure that the event is held annually.

On the course, playing off one handicap (h/c), Peter Lumbe won the Championship with a gross of 222 to pip Folindo Rodrick (-1hc) who had 223 gross. Gabriel Kambale (4h/c) finished third on 234 gross.

For his feat, Lumbe received a trophy, two nights accommodation for two full board at Amarlyllis Hotel, car seat covers and a golf shirt from Salvage 2000.

He thanked his sponsor Paul Lawrence and his playing partners for contributing towards his success.

“I was fired up today and everything I did worked to perfection. I thank all the sponsors and the golf committee for such a wonderful tournament,” said Lumbe.

With a gross score of 158, Muhammad Bhana (h/c 11) won the A Division, Thomas Chafunya (h/c 12) was the runner-up with 165 gross after counting out Hassan Jussab (hc/12).

In B Division, Vincent Chimberenga (h/c 20) was the winner with 180 gross, Zain Aziz (h/c 24) came second on 183 gross while Don Whayo (h/c 20) was third on 188 gross.

In the professionals’ section, Paul Chidale was the champion with 215 gross which was one under, a feat that earned him K500 000, Simon Moses was the runner-up with 222 gross representing six over while Salim Rashid finished third  with a gross of 225.

In the ladies’ category, veteran Roza Mbilizi (h/c10) emerged winner  with 159 net 139 gross, Ulemu Luhanga (h/c23) was the runner-up with 193 net and 147 gross while Irene Mphatso (h/c30) came third with 152 net and 212 gross.

Mbilizi’s prizes included a trophy and a night for two full board at Amaryllis Hotel.
