Little giant Chibade goes to sleep

The theme of death was prevalent in most of Thomas Chibade’s songs.

As news of his passing broke on Wednesday evening, many were left reflecting on a myriad of his songs which focused on death. In his song Freedom Fighter, he sung: “Ndikadzangofa achibale musadzalire, ngati mukufuna mulire ndili moyo.”

The teary tributes that have flowed in the aftermath of his death seem to suggest that his plea in this composition has not been taken into account. Music fans still wish the music genius had lived a bit longer.

It was not just the death theme that Chibade meticulously preyed on. The fallen artist was also a master in offering counsel. In hindsight, one may think there was little reflection on the society he perceived through his musical lens and on the life he lived.

Since he came on the scene in 2004 via his debut album Zatukusira, he rarely put one foot wrong.

Ralph Ching’amba produced Chibade’s first-ever album at Pro Sounds Studios when he took him under his wings.

The renowned producer has since described Chibade as one of the most talented artists he has worked with. He said Chibade will be greatly missed for his uniqueness for his compositions and singing.

Ching’amba said: “He was naturally born talented, hardworking and friendly. It is sad that in the latter stages of his career, he seemed like he did not exploit his potential to the full maybe due to other reasons such as depression, pressure and other things.”

Musicians Union of Malawi president Vita Chirwa said the music industry has been overwhelmed with grief following Chibade’s passing, considering that just over 10 days ago, they also buried another music star Atoht Manje.

Journalist-cum-public relations practitioner Herbert Chandilanga shared a memory of an encounter with Chibade at Sangalala Leisure Centre in Mwanza where the artist went to perform under the auspices of Chibuku Products Limited.

He said the artist delayed to come on stage and there were growing fears that he had played a fast one on the organisers and bolted. The revellers and show organisers got agitated with his antics and from nowhere, Chibade appeared and went straight on stage.

He said: “Within minutes of his opening song traversing the air around the venue, the place was bursting at the seams, too full for comfort.”

Football Association of Malawi competitions and communications manager Gomezgani Zakazaka said he maintained a close relationship with Chibade from 2005 when they met during his time as an intern at MIJ FM Radio until his death.

Zakazaka said: “Naturally, he was a funny character. From the day we met, we clicked and have remained close.”

Chibade’s remains will be laid to rest in Zomba tomorrow.
