The CCAP Livingstonia Synod has launched its much-awaited radio station with a measured promise to support government without relenting on criticising bad governance.

The synod—well known for unwavering criticism of government policies, especially the quota system of selecting students to public universities and same-sex marriages—finally got the licence for Voice of Livingstonia (VOL) Radio last year, ending a decade-long spat with the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra).

Speaking during the launch of the station at St Andrews Church in Mzuzu on Saturday, the synod’s general secretary Levi Nyondo said the synod will work hand in hand with government for the good of Malawians, but promised never to relent on pointing out the ruinous impact of unpopular decisions.

“The radio is not aimed at criticising the government, but to work with the government though this does not mean we will not criticise the government when things go wrong,” said Nyondo of the radio primarily established to spread the word of God and sensitise listeners to issues affecting them.

The launch was graced by Minister of Information and Civic Education Brown Mpinganjira who applauded the synod for the support it offers to government and the people of Malawi.

Mpinganjira described the synod’s relentless criticism as “a watchdog role which has helped the nation to move forward”, saying: “It is important that the people have a strong voice to represent them like the synod through VOL.

“The Bible says the truth shall set you free and if the synod stands on the truth, it will set free people and the nation.”

Opened in January 2013, VOL broadcasts to the whole Northern Region except Chitipa and Karonga. According to Nyondo, plans are underway to extend its coverage radius to the central and southern regions.
