Chakwera: MCP is ready to take Malawians to another levelra

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president Lazarus Chakwera says the party’s followers can help in restoring the pride the country used to have in sustaining food security and inclusive development.

Chakwera said this during a whistle-stop tour MCP had in Zomba City, Chingale, Jali, Liwonde and during a public lecture at Chancellor College.

He said MCP is ready to take Malawians to another level because it has in the pipeline a national development plan which can be ascribed to by everyone.

“We know that the country has plans on paper, but everyone else only emphasises on what they think is right for them.

“So, I am talking about how we can make agriculture such a big business by ensuring that everyone across the board has access to farm inputs.

“This will put to rest the habit of perpetual hunger being experienced time and again,” he said.

On the other hand, Chakwera said there is need to recapitalise the education system by building on the existing infrastructures and institutions with the provision of resources that have a broad spectrum of services for the youth.

In his hour-long address, Chakwera said certain things in the education sector needed to be restructured so as to have young people who can be trained in various competences and make them a driving force of the economic development.

“Let us invest education in the youth and have people who can make decisions based on knowledge so that they are not oppressed or deliberately put in the dark those that do not know anything,” he said.

He added that since the days of the former president the late Hastings Kamuzu Banda, the University of Malawi (Unima) has never been recapitalised, arguing government cannot go business as usual without strengthening the systems that were already laid down.

“We do not want a university graduate that would look for somebody to employ him or her. We can get partners for you because a university degree is not just good for the Capital Hill only,” said Chakwera.
