NGOs urged to register to implement nutrition projects

Mchinji District Council has ordered non-governmental organisations (NGOs) implementing nutrition interventions in the district to register with the council within two months from November 2026, warning that non-compliant organisations will be barred from operating in the district.

The council’s principal nutrition, HIV and Aids officer Davie Panyani issued the directive on Tuesday during the Third Quarter Civil Society Organisation (CSO) Network Review held in the district.

He said the council’s secretariat established that only five out of 21 NGOs implementing nutrition interventions in the district were registered with the council and urged them to disclose their nutrition budgets.

“The mapping form is an important tool because we will be able to know their catchment areas and intervention objectives,

reduce duplication of efforts and avoid compromising the council’s priorities. Working in the district without the council’s knowledge creates room for abuse of donor funds,” said Panyani.

He said the council had engaged the local CSO Network chairperson, the NGO Regulatory Authority and the Civil Society Organisation Nutrition Alliance (Csona) district leads to ensure all organisations involved in nutrition interventions were

 registered.

Csona Mchinji district lead Davis Damson said the alliance was committed to strengthening coordination between NGOs and government sectors to advance nutrition activities in the district.

“We urge our affiliates to register. However, we will engage government to consider extending the ultimatum period so that all players implementing nutrition interventions are registered and accountable to the government,” he said
