The Chewa Heritage Foundation (Chefo) has warned political parties and hotel owners against the use of gulewamkulu in their rallies and cultural events respectively.

The warning follows Chefo’s observation that many political parties, hotel and bottle store owners in the country use gulewamkulu to spice up their activities.

Chefo has sent the warning to the public against the act through a press statement issued on Monday.

The statement reads in part: “Chefo is urging different performing groups to desist from staging the gulewamkulu dance.

Gulewamkulu is a well-known Chewa dance at both local and international levels.

Chefo has, therefore, advised all political leaders to seek permission from Chewa traditional leaders or Chefo if they want to use gulewamkulu in their activities.

“The procedure is that Chefo and chiefs of the area should be communicated [to]because they are custodians of all sorts of culture,” reads the statement, which was signed by Chefo’s publicity secretary Jimmy Chikuni.
