As cholera continues haunting the country, people of group village head Mayenje in Traditional Authority (T/A) Mazengera’s area in Lilongwe have expressed worry over lack of potable water.

Village head Mtimuni said in an interview on Monday that the only borehole in the area broke down four months ago.

Speaking at a community meeting that was attended by 17 concerned village heads in T/A Mazengera, he resolved to hire an expert to repair the borehole.

“We are drinking water from a well that we dug after seeing no solution to the challenges we are facing now. We agreed in a meeting to hire someone to repair it for us, but the challenge is that the spare parts required are expensive for the community to buy,” said Mtimuni.

Gertrude Samuel, 44, from Mtimuni Village, said the well is some four kilometres away and women scramble for water.

In his remarks, village head Gomani said: “This unclean source of water may lead to a cholera outbreak and other water borne diseases. Everyone else is scared of this situation.”

Lilongwe district water development officer Marvel Tibu said her office would take up the matter.

“It is a challenge to look after all the 6 389 boreholes in the district. The community is supposed to maintain these boreholes but due to cholera outbreak where Lilongwe is the second hardest hit district, we will intervene immediately,” she said.
