Macfarlane Mbewe Science Quiz tomorrow
Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome Programme (MLW) will tomorrow host the Macfarlane Mbewe National Science Quiz at the Bingu International Convention Centre in Lilongwe.
MLW associate professor of infection and immunology Kondwani Jambo, who is founder of the Science for All initiative hosting the quiz, said they expect this year’s competition to be exciting.
He said: “It will be the first of its kind because it will be innovative. We are going to use a lot of technology to run this quiz”.
He said six schools, identified by Ministry of Education as best performers in national examinations, will participate in the quiz. The schools are Nkhata Bay, Blantyre, Loyola Jesuit of Kasungu, Dedza, St. Mary’s of Zomba and Providence of Mulanje.
Eight students from these schools will participate in the quiz previously restricted to Southern Region schools.
In a separate interview, a previous participant Trintas Kulwemba, a bachelor of medicine and bachelor of surgery student at Kamuzu University of Health Sciences said the competition helped her academically.
Apart from being awarded the best student at Stella Maris Secondary School, Kulwemba was offered internship at MLW where she said her interaction with various researchers motivated her.
Corporate sponsors of the event include Nico Holdings plc, Eris Properties, NBS Bank plc and Celestial Electronics.
The quiz was named after journalist Macfarlane Mbewe who collapsed and died on duty on February 23 2023 and while working working with MLW.
