Macoha donates to clients in Nkhata Bay

Malawi Council for the Handicapped (Macoha), with support from Hope and Healing International, has donated K1.5 million worth of sewing kits, garments and hairdressing equipment to eight of the organisation’s clients in Nkhata Bay.

The beneficiaries were drawn from Senior Chief Kabunduli, traditional authorities (T/As) Fukamapili and Timbiri in the district.

Macoha Nkhata Bay district assistant rehabilitation officer Matatiyo Chirambo said the donation was made to economically empower people with disabilities.

“We have many clients in the district but this year we targeted eight of them. Three are hairdressers while the rest are tailors. Today we brought them the equipment to kick-start their business endeavours,” he said.

Chirambo said some of the beneficiaries are guardians of children with different disabilities, as such, the children’s livelihoods will improve through proper utilisation of the equipment.

He, therefore, cautioned the beneficiaries against selling the equipment received.

One of the beneficiaries, Nelia Nyirenda thanked Macoha for providing her with a sewing machine which she said she will be using for her tailoring business.

She said she will use the proceeds from the business to fend for her 14-year-old son.

“My son has a disability which makes him crawl when he wants to move around and his clothes are frequently torn.

“Having received this machine and garments, it will be easy for me to repair his clothes and also realise money to fend for my family,” Nyirenda said.
