Mafunyeta’s legacy lives on

Mafunyeta is a name that holds meaning in Malawi’s music, especially in the dancehall genre.

The Ndimakondwa hit maker, who succumbed to asthma 11 years ago, is remembered by other artists and fans for his unique sound and style.

Mafunyeta emerged as a trailblazer after releasing his single Kangobwera in 2009.

His influence is still evident with dancehall artists citing him as a key inspiration.

In an interview yesterday, dancehall artist Malinga Mafia described Mafunyeta as a pioneer of dancehall music in Malawi.

“Mafunyeta laid the foundation for dancehall artists in the country. He changed the game and many artists of the genre rose up to find a spotlight,” Mafia said.

Up-and-coming dancehall musician Kellie Divine concurred with Mafia, saying she still draws inspiration from him.

“I have been inspired by Mafunyeta’s work and I believe if he was still alive, dancehall music would not be same,” she added

To remember and celebrate the fallen artist’s legacy, a commemoration show is slated for August 18 at the National Memorial Tower (Area 18) in Lilongwe.

Lead organiser Yanja Chigamba said the artist’s legacy is still felt among new musicians and young people who patronise the event.

“Up to now, we see artists that are using Mafunyeta’s style  which shows that his music is still relevant. The music industry is proof that his legacy lives on as shown by the impressive turnout last year,” he said.

Chigamba also said they see the event as an opportunity to bring forth a continuous platform to reachout to young people on mental health and other issues.

“We are going to have mental health experts from St John of God who will talk about mental health problems and how people can deal with issues like depression and suicide,” he added.

The event, themed Let’s talk about it, is for free and will feature artists such as Malinga Mafia, Kellie Devine, Jay Jay C, Lulu and Wikise.

Mafunyeta, real name Patrick Magalasi, died on August 13 2013 aged 26. He was a member of a musician group Mabilinganya Empire.
