policeMalawi has deported a 38-year-old “wanted” Tanzanian national for allegedly being behind a sophisticated human trafficking web in the country.

The suspect, Basha Adenew, had been residing at Dzaleka Refugee Camp in Malawi’s central district of Dowa.

He claimed to an Ethiopian asylum seeker yet he was engaged in the stealthy business for some years.

Malawi’s Immigration Department spokesperson for Central Region Ealack Banda said the Tanzanian possessed no legal documents to stay at Dzaleka Refugee Camp..

The suspect is thought to have been trafficking humans from Ethiopia using unchartered routes to Dzaleka Camp where they could stay for a while before transporting them to their preferred destinations.

Banda said the suspect was deported and handed over to Tanzanian immigration authorities last week through Songwe Border in Karonga.

“He was arrested by our colleagues from the police and handed over to us. The man had been staying at Dzaleka claiming he was an Ethiopian asylum seeker but upon his arrest we realised that he was not one of those who applied for it from the Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security,” explained Banda.
