Malawi continues to make strides in the press freedom realm with the latest World Press Freedom Index indicating a two-step rise from 75 in 2013 to 73 this year.

The country recorded its biggest leap on the index — published by Reporters Without Borders — last year when it climbed up by 71 positions from 146 in 2012 to 75. The Press Freedom Index is an annual global ranking of nations basing on countries’ reported press freedom records in the previous year.

Reacting to the news, chairperson of the Malawi Chapter of Media Institute of Southern Africa (Misa Malawi), Anthony Kasunda, said the move signified that things were getting better in the country.

“Just two years ago, we had the worst position but when former president Joyce Banda came into power she tried her best to improve it by, among others, repealing Section 46,” he said.
