Youth and Sports Minister Enoch Chihana has pledged support to Malawi’s netball star Mwawi Kumwenda’s fundraising event scheduled to take place on Saturday at Planet Club in Karonga.

According to Mwawi, the event seeks to raise about K500 000 (about $1 666) for a coaching clinic for some primary school pupils in the Northern Region.

Chihana said he wished he could have graced the event, but due to other government engagements, he will delegate a high level representation.

“She is doing great work in uplifting the standard of netball at the grass roots. She is, in fact, complementing government efforts,” said Chihana.

He described Mwawi as a role model to aspiring netballers in the country.

“She has done us proud by being the only netball export. It is not an easy feat and the fact that she has decided to share her experience with other girls speaks volume of her patriotism,” he said.

Mwawi, who is Universal Industries Frooty brand ambassador, will be in Karonga for three days.

On Friday, prior to the fundraising event, she will hold a coaching clinic at Lulindo Primary School, courtesy of Universal Industries.

In an interview on Tuesday, she thanked government for supporting her activities. She also said she is indebted to Universal Industries.
