Moroccan Embassy chargé d’affaires Mohammed Oumiyer has urged the Malawi Government to accelerate industrialisation through manufacturing and agro-processing, noting that the country’s rich agricultural resources and tourism potential provide a strong foundation for economic transformation.
Speaking on Friday in Lilongwe on the sidelines of the 27th anniversary celebration of King Mohammed VI’s reign, the envoy said Malawi has significant potential to expand its industrial base, particularly through agro-industrialisation.
He said: “Malawi has many beautiful things for tourism and also for industrialisation. Agriculture is one of the main areas where we can cooperate and agro-industrialisation is particularly important for Malawi.”
Oumiyer said Morocco’s economic progress was driven by strategic leadership, industrial development and job creation.
“Economic transformation comes from the vision and strategy of the country. Industrialisation is important because it creates employment, especially for vocationally trained people and technicians, while contributing to the country’s gross domestic product and overall wealth,” he said.
In his remarks, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation George Chaponda described Morocco as one of Africa’s leading economies, saying Malawi is keen to learn from its development experience.
He noted that Morocco topped the African Development Bank’s Africa Industrialisation Index, attributing the achievement to sustained investment in infrastructure, renewable energy, agriculture and manufacturing.
“Malawi remains eager to learn from Morocco’s development experience as we pursue our own sustainable development aspirations,” he said.
