Malawi has intervened in a food crisis in Dedza by distributing 2 000 bags of maize and soya beans.

The news follows reports of deaths of eight people due to hunger in Traditional Authority (T/A) Tambala in the district.

On Monday, Dedza district commissioner Lawford Palani and Senior Chief Kachindamoto confirmed the donation to The Nation.

Said Palani: “We received 2 000 bags of maize and soya beans on Friday which we will start distributing on Tuesday [yesterday].

Government’s intervention came after my office reported the deaths of eight people.”

He said the maize and soya beans will be distributed for free to villagers who have no food.

Palani attributed the hunger to insufficient rains in the last rainy season. Senior Chief Kachindamoto said the donation will continue to other areas in the district.

“We have started with T/A Tambala because of the deaths,” she said.

Member of Parliament for Dedza South Constituency Patrick Chilondola commended government for the food relief.

However, Chilondola urged other well-wishers to assist with more food.

“There are many people who have no food. Some people will benefit but the majority will continue eating wild tubers. Iurge other organisations to assist,” said Chilondola.
