The Nurses and Midwives Council of Malawi (NMCM) has bemoaned the negative attitude of nurses and midwives towards patients, saying their general behaviour in management, leadership and care departments is below 50 percent of the council’s requirements.

NMCM director of monitoring and evaluation Thokozile Lipato disclosed this on Friday at a dissemination meeting in Mzuzu City.

Lipato said they conducted a research on how nurses and midwives were performing in management, leadership and care departments after receiving complaints of nurses’ negative attitude towards patients in health institutions.

“The findings were below 50 percent of the council’s requirements in all the departments,” she said.

Lipato said the council has started a Strengthening Nursing and Midwifery in Malawi Project which aims at changing the attitude and standards of nurses and midwives in the country’s health facilities.

Inkosi Mpherembe of Mzimba concurred with the council on the misconduct of medicals practitioners.

“Medical practitioners should kindly explain to the patients. Nurses should develop a caring and loving spirit,” said Inkosi Mpherembe.
