Last hope: The athletes captured at the airport on their way to Algiers

“The rowers first completed the 2 000m. They first competed in the heat where they finished on fourth position. They then later competed in the B Category and again finished fourth again,” said Malawi Oympic Committee (MOC) communications officer Kathyrina Phiri.

Zimbabwe rowers  Kenneth Raynor and Lorryn Bass scooped gold and silver, respectively, and have qualified for 2018 Buenos Aires Youth Olympic Games.

The Malawi team at the continental youth games comprised chef de Mission Kenneth  Dzekedzeke, three athletes Donald Chavula, Dalitso Gunde and Moneyi Chaingaipe and the two rowers.

“Our hope now rests in the three athletes. Chavula will compete in the 200m and 100m, Gunde in the 400m and Chingaipe in the 3 000m,” said Phiri. n
