Malawi scoops netball gold at Police Games

The Malawi Police Netball Team has won this year’s Southern African Regional Police Chiefs Cooperation Organisation (Sarpcco) championship underway in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Malawi Police Netball Team defeated Zimbabwe Police 42-41 in the final at Uhuru Stadium to lift the 2022 Sarpcco Games netball trophy.

To make it to the final, Malawi won all their five games against Zambia 30-27, e-Swatini, formerly Swaziland, 42-32, Tanzania 31-40 and Namibia 60-20.

In an interview on Monday, Malawi Police Netball coach Madano Tepetheya said the victory proves that the team is good enough to do well in international competitions.

He said: “I am delighted to be the first coach to win this major tournament in the history of Malawi Police Service.

“Let me thank the players, who were drawn from different Police formations, for the highly spirited performance.

“Special mention should go to our matron Inspector General of the Malawi Police Service Merlyn Nachulu Yolamu for the timely support and encouragement.”

Malawi is represented in men’s and women’s football, volleyball, tennis, chess, darts and athletics.

So far, the Malawi Police football team has qualified for semi-finals after defeating Namibia 2-1 in the group stages.

They will meet the winners between Zimbabwe and Mozambique Police. The chess men team have won silver medal while darts women’s team have got bronze medal.

The Malawi Police Service football team last won the championship in 2015 when Derklerk Msakakuona was coach for the area 30 outfits.

Malawi Police Service sports coordinator Audlow Makonyola attributed the success to the proper selection criteria of the squad.

The two-week tournament, which will end on September 17, involves police teams in the southern Africa region.
