Malawi signs pact to host continental business summit

Minister of Trade and Industry Mark Katsonga has signed an agreement with Human Capital International, (HCI) a Ugandan-based development firm, to help grow the country’s small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

The first step, according to the agreement, is that Malawi will host an enterprise African Summit in June next year.

Katsonga: It is a great platform for SMEs

Speaking after signing the pact in Lilongwe on Thursday, Katsonga said he was impressed with what transpired during a similar summit in Kampala, Uganda this year where he was invited.

He said: “The summit in Uganda pooled together SMEs from across Africa together with leaders of religious organisations and Cabinet ministers from across Africa.

“It was a great platform where issues affecting SMEs

were discussed and solutions exchanged. We thought it would be beneficial to host a similar summit here.”

HCI president Emmanuel Dei-Tumi said the summit will be an important platform for Malawi to trumpet its investment readiness to the whole of Africa.

“The summit is going to showcase the investment readiness of Malawi because we are bringing so many investors from across the continent in

 Malawi,” he said.

Dei-Tumi said Malawi is an integral part of the global community and the summit will be beneficial to the country.

“SMEs are moving away from competition to collaboration and partnership,” he said.

Dei-Tumi said the United Nations designated June 27 as UN Day for SMEs and Malawi is expected to host the whole continent where about 900 delegates and SMEs will attend.
