Malawian artists revel in Mdubz Jozi Awards

A number of Malawian artists based in Johannesburg, South Africa have been recognised for their outstanding work under the inaugural Mdubz Jozi Awards.

At least 21 artists were awarded in different categories, including a Lifetime Achiever Award which was presented to forgotten reggae star Sally Nyundo, who is now based in the Rainbow Nation. Another notable winner during the awards was dancehall artist Queen Mishu, who won the Best Female Artist of the Year Award.

Speaking in an interview from her base, Queen Mishu said she was delighted to be among those that were recognised for their efforts in music.

“Artists who are based outside Malawi lack platforms such as these. When you are singled out like that, you get encouraged,” she said.

On a personal note, the artist thanked her fans for the award, which is her second after she also won a similar award and the Song of the Year Award in 2019 during the 265 Jozi Awards.

Queen Mishu, whose real name is Milcah Shumba, said: “It is not easy. The joy is so overwhelming. I owe it to all my fans.” 

The Mdubz Jozi Awards are organised by Banana Bush Entertainment led by Chimwemwe Rajab. In a separate interview, Rajab said the awards aim at bringing together Malawian artists who are based in Johannesburg and offer them a platform for recognition.

He said next year they want to extend the scope of the awards by including Malawian creatives who are based in Pretoria and Durban.

“The winners are chosen by a public vote through a link that we provide on our online pages. Right now the awards are not associated with any monetary value, but that is our plan depending on how we can mobilise resources,” said Rajab.

Other winners during the awards included Dj Muller, CoreenMilanzi, Ras Solace and Future Boy, among others.
