Malawians will benefit from embassy project—US
United States Ambassador David Young says the new $90 million (about K92 billion) US Embassy office complex project will benefit Malawians through employment.
Speaking yesterday in Lilongwe during the official groundbreaking of the project, he said the amount is part of the project’s cost of $373 million (about K375 billion).
Young said there are about 300 locals on the project site, but 1 000 locals will have been employed by the end of the project.
He said: “This will be a two and a half years project which is going to be ready for opening between September and December in 2025. We are happy that it will be a source of livelihood for many Malawians who will be working here.”
Young said the complex, among others, will have a permanent arts collection to showcase “a dialogue of art work by artists from around the country”.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Nancy Tembo, who was present at the ceremony, expressed gratitude for the US Government’s commitment to the bilateral relationship with Malawi.
She said the project, when finalised, will change the face of Lilongwe City Centre.
Said Tembo: “The fact that the US Government is building an office complex of this magnitude speaks volumes of the fact that our relationship, as governments, is more permanent.”
The symbolic launch was conducted using golden shovels. The embassy donated one pair to Tembo while the other will be presented to President Lazarus Chakwera.
