Malawi’s drama group returns with new play

The message from Malawi’s popular drama group is: people in villages should work hard to fend for themselves instead of counting on the wealth of their relations in town.

Kwathu Drama Group 2010 play Bambo a Juniyo will be re-staged at the Blantyre Cultural Centre on Sunday with this specific message.

Written by the group’s leader, Eric Mabedi, the play exposes the greedy behaviour that people, especially from the husbands’ side, showcase by looking at everything in the home as belonging to them.

“Most of the times, the husband’s relatives come to homes and record the property in the household thinking it belongs to them after the death of their relative disregarding that he has children and a wife. Things are even worse when the wife is a housewife, in this case, they think everything in the home belongs to the man.

“The problem is, people do not know what goes on behind closed doors. Women do a lot of things that include not sleeping during the night, running naked during the night, feeding snakes and other animals as well keeping a lot of charms in order to bring riches in their homes,” said Mabedi in an interview on Wednesday.

During the Sunday show, fans are sure to get more of the niceties that make Kwathu an irresistible brand through provoking episodes, life-saving lessons, relentless humour, natural acting skills from big-name actors such as Charles Mphoka, Evance Mbewe, Linda Chatha, Enifa Chiwaya and Emma Chikwembeya.

“Apart from the actors and actresses who people already know, the two-hour long play has also included new names such as Moses Mandebvu, Ferguson Magona and Tame Mwawa,” he said.

Mabedi said he felt he should script such a play that would tackle what happens in society regarding the wealth of deceased relatives.

He said the group is very happy that it will for the first time stage the play, premiered in Mulanje in 2010, at the Blantyre entertainment mecca.

Mabedi,  who is recovering from an operation he had last month, hinted that the group will premier its new play titled Mwala written by Charles Mphoka  next month if all things go according to plan.
