Muslim Association of Malawi (MAM) through Darussunah Foundation has donated K5 million towards the completion of Simayiwa Clinic in Salima District.

Speaking on Wednesday after handing over the cheque, MAM national chairperson Sheikh Idrissa Muhammad said they were complementing government’s efforts to develop the country.

“It is not only about money that one can contribute towards the country’s development, but also being patriotic by offering prayers for the country to head in the right direction,” he said.

On the donation, the cleric said MAM was approached by Salima Central legislator Gerald Phiri (Malawi Congress Party) for help to complete construction of the clinic.

“We believe in assisting the health sector whenever we have an opportunity because we believe healthy people are capable of contributing towards the development of the country,” said Muhammad.

On his part, Phiri said having the clinic fully operational will decongest the district hospital which is mostly overwhelmed.

“It is important that we should work together with different stakeholders to get this clinic operational because this will enhance the quality of health service in the district,” he said.

Salima district medical officer George Kasondo said the clinic has not been operational for 30 years, which led people to encroach its premises.

“It is the wish of health officials in the district to see the clinic serving its purpose because it will offer medical services to people who live far from the district hospital,” he said.

Due to lack of funds, Simayiwa Clinic is yet to be fully-fledged so that it can offer basic health services to surrounding communities.
