The Independence PopUp Market scheduled for City Centre in Lilongwe during the Independence weekend is set to be a celebration of Malawian culture and heritage.

Malawi Independence pop up market task force chairperson Dennis Imaan told The Nation that the event, dubbed Ufulu PopUp market, is meant to celebrate the country’s independence while promoting local businesses, food, arts and crafts. The event will also be spiced up with poetry recitals and live music performances.

“The Ufulu pop up market will be an exciting event that will bring people together to celebrate local businesses, artists and performers to create a vibrant and festive atmosphere,” he said.

Imaan said the event, which will be held in conjunction with the Lilongwe City Council, will give Lilongwe residents an opportunity to explore local creativity and talent.

“We also have dedicated areas for children’s activities, ensuring a fun-filled experience for families. Additionally, there are opportunities for local entrepreneurs and businesses to set up stalls and showcase their products and services to a diverse audience,” he said.

Imaan said the pop-up market is more than an event.

“It is a celebration of our nation’s independence and a showcase of our rich cultural heritage. It is a time for community engagement, fostering collaboration and supporting local businesses,” he said.

In a statement, the organisers called for collaborations from organisations and corporate institutions.

“Together we can create a vibrant, inclusive and economically beneficial event that represents the true spirit of our nation,” reads the communication in part.

The Ufulu PopUp Market will cover the area from Parliament Roundabout to Sunbird Capital  Roundabout and will take place for two days during the Independence celebration weekend. Malawi’s Independence Day falls on July 6, which is next Thursday.
