The Nkhata Bay Magistrate’s Court has sentenced a 24-year-old man to 20 years imprisonment for abducting and defiling a 15-year-old girl in the district.

State prosecutor Oscar Mulungu told the court on Wednesday that the man found the girl stranded along Lake Malawi.

“The girl came from Blantyre to look for piece work. The man took advantage of her situation, promising to take care of her,” he said.

Mulungu said the man took her to his house where he told her to work.

“But on December 19 2020 his wife, who was away, came and chased the girl. She reported to police that she was forced to sleep with the man. A medical examination at Nkhata Bay District Hospital revealed that she was defiled,” he said.

In court, the man denied the first count of abduction and pleaded guilty to the count of defilement.

In mitigation, he prayed for leniency, saying the girl seduced him.

In his ruling, senior resident magistrate Issa Maulidi said the convict should have helped the girl out of her trouble without taking advantage of her.

He, therefore, handed him the sentence.
