A man is expected to appear before the Child Justice Court in Malawi’s commercial city, Blantyre, for allegedly impregnating and attempting to marry a 15-year-old girl.
According to the court records, Zafik Suleman will answer charges of abducting a minor and defilement which are contrary to Section 138 of the Penal Code and Section 78 of the Child Care, Protection and Justice Act, among others.
In an interview at the court on Monday, the victim’s parents alleged their daughter went missing on January 1 this year after they found out that she was pregnant.
The girl’s father said he reported the case of his missing child to Chileka Police.
He alleged his daughter came back home mid-January, but went missing again.
The court on Monday also heard Suleman’s application for bail whose ruling is expected this Wednesday.
The date for the hearing of the case is yet to be announced.
Eye of the Child executive director Maxwell Matewere said the organisation is looking forward to speedy conclusion of the case.
