Mangochi Council unveilsK1.9bn infrastructure project
Minister of Local Government, Unity and Culture Richard Chimwendo Banda says the construction of a council chamber and finance office for Mangochi District Council is a step in the right direction to transform Mangochi into a city.
He said this on Tuesday during a ground-breaking ceremony of construction works to be co-funded by the Government of Iceland and Malawi Government to the tune of K1.9 billion.
Chimwendo Banda said the modern structures will be an epitome of beauty befitting a city.
He said: “It is government’s plan to transform Mangochi into a city. But before that, we need to have infrastructure befitting the status of a city.
“This is why we partnered the Government of Iceland to achieve the dream.”
Mangochi Central legislator Victoria Kingstone (Democratic Progressive Party) said the structures will improve the council’s service delivery.
Mangochi district commissioner Smart Gwedemula said the chamber will help the council to host meetings in a conducive environment while the finance office will facilitate coordination among accounts officials.
“As a council, we do not have a chamber to host meetings. Whenever we have meetings we go to Mangochi Municipal Hall because they have one,” he said.
In her remarks, Iceland Ministry for Foreign director general Elin Rosa said the construction of the two facilities marks a milestone in the cooperation between the Government of Iceland and Malawi.
The Embassy of Iceland, through Mangochi Basic Services Programme has been supporting Mangochi District Council in many areas such as education, health, gender and youth empowerment.
