Marinica ‘abandons’ Flames before match

Flames coach Mario Marinica abandoned his charges at least 10 minutes to the final whistle in yesterday’s 2023 Africa Cup of the Nations (Afcon) qualifier against Egypt at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.

The Romanian left hurriedly towards the dressing room as the Flames trailed 0-4 after a shambolic display, prompting some fans to start throwing objects on the pitch.

But the Romanian told a press conference later on that he left because he “had to attend to other issues”.

He also ruled out any possibilities of resigning.

Frustrated Flames fans found relief in applauding Egypt’s England-based captain Mohammad Salah as he was being substituted towards the end.

That was not all.

Marinica: We need to move on

The Liverpool superstar stole another moment when, on his way to the dressing room after the match, waved the crowd to a thunderous roar.

Police fired tear gas to disperse the angry fans after the match.

During the match, some fans also demanded the resignation of Football Association of Malawi president Walter Nyamilandu with chants of ‘achoke! [step down]’.

Flames players had to dodge a flurry of objects that rained from the stands.

Joseph Mpunga, a teacher in Lilongwe, described the Flames’ loss as painful.

He said: “I am very angry with this performance.  I am very disappointed with this mediocre performance.  Of course, Egypt are a better side, but we could have done better.

“The coach owes us an explanation.”

Following yesterday’s loss, the Flames anchor the group with three points from four matches.

They are tied on points with third-placed Ethiopia who lost 2-3 to Guinea on Monday.

Egypt and Guinea have nine points each, but the Pharaos on goal difference.
