Former Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) deputy governor Henry Mathanga yesterday pleaded not guilty to charges of falsifying economic indicators date to reflect a healthy economy.

In an interview yesterday, his lawyer Powell Nkhutabasa said Mathanga was being sought by Malawi Police Service Fiscal Section and he surrendered himself on Tuesday. He said his client spent a day in a police cell until the Lilongwe Chief Resident Magistrate’s Court granted him bail yesterday.

Lilongwe chief resident magistrate Patrick Chirwa granted Mathanga bail on condition that he paid K1 million cash bail bond, produce two reliable sureties bonded at K5 million each non-cash and that he surrender his travel documents.
