Mchinji councillors to support women aspirants in 2019

Two councillors in Mchinji District have said they will not contest in 2019 local government elections to pave the way for women contestants as one way of encouraging women’s political participation. The  councillors are Stanley Banda and Lymon Sakala, for Kalumbe and Chimimbe wards respectively.

The development comes in the wake of a Women Empowered for Leadership (WE4L) programme implemented by Governance Gender Justice and Development Centre (GGJDC) with funding from Hivos, which is championing increased and effective participation by women in politics and public administration.

Out of 12 wards, the district has no female councillor and has  one female member of Parliament out of six constituencies.

GGJDC executive director Ruth Manda applauded the two councillors for pledging support and paving the way for women, saying other councillors should emulate their example. n
