MCP parliamentary hopeful seeks recount
Malawi Congress Party (MCP) parliamentary candidate for Lilongwe Mtandire-Mtsiriza Constituency George Zulu has petitioned Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to recount the votes in the area.
Unofficial results at the constituency tally centre show that Zulu trails Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate Alfred Gangata by five votes as he got 12 284 votes against Gangata’s 12 289 votes.

In his petition, Zulu said the constituency recorded 445 void votes; hence, his request for a recount considering the narrow difference in the unofficial results.
He said: “I refer to my letter dated 18 September 2025 where I requested MEC to review the void ballot papers because the unofficial results printed by MEC showed a difference of 5 [five] votes between me and the DPP candidate, and that the constituency recorded 445 void votes for the constituency.
“After organising and separating the void ballot papers for the Presidential, Parliamentary and Local Government Elections, they found that only 345 of the 445 void ballot papers for the parliamentary race were delivered to the district tally centre.”
Zulu said that since 100 void ballot papers that are missing exceed the difference between the two top candidates, it entails that the 2025 parliamentary election for Lilongwe Mtandile-Mtsiliza Constituency cannot be concluded.
In an interview yesterday, Zulu claimed that the process was infiltrated and MEC officials were allegedly compromised to manipulate the results.
During an update on Sunday evening, MEC chairperson Annabel Mtalimanja said the commission continues to receive complaints relating to the electoral process.
She said: “Let me assure Malawians that no genuine complaint submitted through the proper channels will be ignored. The commission remains committed to fairness, transparency, and adherence to the law in handling all matters brought before it.”
At party level, MCP and United Democratic Front have also petitioned MEC to look into the alleged irregularities.
