It would seem 2013 is becoming a successful year for the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) in sports as its Marine Unit won the inaugural K2 million FAM Beach Soccer Cup at Sunbird Livingstonia in Salima on Saturday.

The unit, which is based in Mangochi, beat fellow district rivals Yagawo 3-0.

The victory comes barely three weeks after Kamuzu Barracks Football Club beat Moyale Barracks 1-0 to lift the Carlsberg Cup.

in the semi-finals, Marine Unit beat Mchengawamoto 2-1 while Yagawo beat Tourism 2-1. The soldiers got K300 000 while Yagawo took home K200 000.

Minister of Energy Ibrahim Matola pledged government support to promoting the sport to do well in international competitions.

Beach Soccer of Malawi (BSM) president Kondwani Gondwe described the tournament as a success and urged teams to take the sport seriously.

“This is not the first time for you (FAM) to support us. In 2010, you invited Fifa experts who conducted seminars for our coaches and referees, setting up structures for the sport to grow. The fact that now we will have a national team is evidence of the importance of that seminar,” said Gondwe.

FAM executive member James Mwenda said his organisation will continue to support the sport by organising such competitions.
