The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has stepped up its preparations for the 2014 Tripartite Elections by engaging in a number of activities.

Already, the elections supervising body has re-demarcated the wards and accredited institutions that will carry out civic and voter education.

MEC announced that every eligible candidate is supposed to register, whether one registered during the previous election or not. Registration starts on July 22this year.

Yesterday, MEC conducted training of constituency returning officers, supervisors and district elections clerks on voter registration in Blantyre.

And opening the training, MEC commissioner the Reverend Emmanuel Chinkwita-Phiri warned that mistakes or lack of knowledge during the voting process will affect the results of the elections.

“If you miss something or get it wrong, you will also get it wrong during the actual registration. This will have the potential of spoiling and wasting all the efforts made by the commission to have free, fair and credible elections,” Phiri told the participants during a training exercise on the registration process.

Chinkwita-Phiri announced that MEC will hire quality control managers, who will be checking on the quality of data being captured.
